Shaznay Martin may have the best eyeliner game in South London

BEAUTY CHAT: Shaznay Martin shares her evening beauty rituals and the importance of recognising the beauty in our differences.

Shaznay is a Journalist, Screen Writer and Producer known for her culturally insightful and thought-provoking work. She is a multifaceted creative whose desire for unapologetic self-expression shines through her work and her beauty rituals.

What is your beauty secret?

Vaseline on my lips before I sleep!

What’s your favourite beauty hack and why?

Using Maybelline’s Tattoo Brow Peel-off Tint as a lipliner base! It’s amazing because it ensures your lipliner stays in tact all day/evening and you don’t have to worry too much about smudging or reapplication.

What is the beauty product you cannot live without?

Faded Topicals Serum! It’s been really essential to my skincare journey as it helps a lot with fading out dark acne scars and evening out skin tone.

When do you feel the most beautiful?

When I’ve gotten all cute for a night out. I will even make myself late staring at my reflection in awe.

What does Black beauty mean to you?

I think it’s just about re-configuring our concept of beauty and accepting that there is beauty in difference. Not just in being Black, but within Blackness itself - because let's be real, there are certain Black features that are deemed as more desirable than others within the community as well as outside of it. It’s about deconstructing the partiality to colourism, texturism, and featurism.

On a personal *and* societal level. Not letting social media dictate the terms of Black beauty. Accepting that things like hyperpigmentation and dark circles are natural and normal and do not take away from beauty. Realising that the best validation comes from within!
